Title: Invasive Species in Our Natural Landscape: A Story of Foes, Friends, and Future Directions
Description: Invasive plant species and their impacts are one of the major challenges in local habitat restoration, with huge economic costs associated with control and management. In this presentation, we will consider the latest research, including what makes an introduced species invasive, the impacts these invaders can have on native plants and animals, and how invasive species may be identified and regulated on the state level. We will then consider how we might identify and eradicate new invaders still in their earliest stages of spread using valuable information now being collected by a network of gardens across North America, known as Public Gardens as Sentinels against Invasive Plants (PGSIP). We will learn about this garden effort and discuss some of the most recently detected problematic ornamental species with the highest potential to become the next invaders in our…
