2011 Calendar of Events

Sunday, January 23, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.  Winter Woodland Walk.
This walk will be as leisurely as the weather will permit, with brief stops to note whatever aspect of nature strikes the fancy of the participants. Meet at the entrance to Parker's Woods at Haight and Bruce Avenues.

Thursday March 10, 7:00 – 10:00 p.m.   Annual Meeting, LaBoiteaux Woods.
After a brief business meeting, we will be recognizing the Boy Scouts who constructed bridges in Buttercup Valley Preserve. There will also be a brief discussion of Northside Greenspace's new Adopt a Plot program.

Friday, April 8, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.   Evening Wildflower Walk in Buttercup Valley Preserve.
This is the first in a series of brief Friday evening walks held on the second Friday of each month, followed by optional dinner at a Northside establishment.

Saturday, April 16, 10:00 a.m. – Noon.   Buttercup Valley Garlic Mustard Removal.
Garlic Mustard is an invasive plant that crowds out our native wildflowers. Help continue the process of removing it from Buttercup Valley Nature Preserve. All volunteers will be treated to pizza at noon.

Saturday, May 7, 10:00 a.m. – Noon.   Parker's Woods Garlic Mustard Removal. Part 1.
Garlic Mustard is an invasive plant that crowds out our native wildflowers. Help continue the process of removing it from Parker's Woods. All volunteers will be treated to pizza at noon.

Friday, May 13, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.   Evening walk in Buttercup Valley Preserve.
This is the second in a series of brief Friday evening walks held on the second Friday of each month, followed by optional dinner at a Northside establishment.

Sunday, June 5, Noon – 3:00 p.m.   Northside Greenspace Picnic. Includes Mini workshop on native plant gardening and landscaping.
Join Northside Greenspace members and friends for a potluck picnic at Keystone Flora Nursery, LLC. Bring a dish to share and take a tour of this emerging native plant nursery. From Winton Road turn east onto Kings Run Drive (traffic light there), then north onto Winton Ridge Lane, and left onto Wooden Shoe Hollow. Follow the signs to 5081Woodenshoe Hollow. Carpooling is recommended. Call 921-2250 for more information.

Join the Northside Greenspace contingent in Northside's largest annual public celebration. Meet at the Bethlehem Temple Church parking lot at Ashtree and Hamilton at 11:30 a.m.

Help remove this invasive shrub from Buttercup Valley Nature Preserve. Meet at the preserve entrance at the east end of Stanford Drive. All volunteers will be treated to pizza at noon.

Buttercup Valley Preserve

Buttercup Valley Nature Preserve is a Northside park donated to the city in 1973 after failed efforts to develop the land for an apartment complex. The park entrance is located at the east end of Stanford Drive in Northside. Turn right (east) onto Stanford from Hamilton Ave., which is about one mile north of Knowlton’s Corner.

Parker’s Woods

Parker’s Woods is the largest of the Northside parks and is named after Alexander Langland Parker, who sold the property for the park to the city. The park entrance is located at Haight and Bruce Avenues. Turn right (east) onto Bruce from Hamilton Avenue about one half mile north of Knowltons Corner.

Badgley Run Park is a small park in Northside named after Robert Badgley, one of the early settlers of Cumminsville. The southern entrance to Badgley Run is on Washburn Street just west of its intersection with Kirby Road.
